At Fridays, a maigre day, Catholics traditionally ate fish, since eating meat
wasn’t allowed on that day.
Students of Amsterdam's former Nautical College used to have dinner in the fish restaurant at the square. The students of the international master’s program, now housed in the old Nautical College’s building, don’t have the chance to get familiarized with the neighbourhood during the short spell of their courses. Friday, Fishday is about to change that: jointly initiated by Klaas de Vries and his buddy, both fish gourmets and chefs of restaurant ‘éénvistwéévis’, the students will be invited to join them and start cooking at their outdoor kitchen. First, we’ll go out fishing, followed by a spot of artisan fish smoking and a day at the local fish auction market. Every Friday afternoon, (old) Dutch fish recipes will be prepared at the square. Visitors of Experimenta can join in for a workshop or just to enjoy a Friday Fishday meal.
